Liberosis

Liberosis, formed in 2018, is an eclectic blend of classical and jazz musicians, channeling their creative prowess through the lens of tango music.

What makes the band most remarkable is the culmination of styles and skills among players and their ability to improvise. Their mixture of classical, jazz, and Latin music has resulted in a new style - rarely performed or heard in the world.

The leader, Iseul Kim formed this group with a sound in her mind and later brought in other musicians with an emphasis on world music.

Review

Though comprised of musicians from jazz and classical backgrounds, it’s Latin jazz that’s emphasized on the latest from Iseul Kim’s Liberosis ensemble. It’s a more natural fit than one might initially assume, and these Best Jazz on Bandcamp columns have offered up numerous examples where, say, the music of Argentina snaps right into place with a chamber jazz approach. This music is cheerful, and exhibits a chipper bounce that slides gracefully into harmonic interludes. Joining the pianist are bassist Hoo Kim, drummer Jae Won Lee, violinist Jongsu Yoon, and cellist Ok Joung Kim.

Iseul Kim’s First Project Liberosis is the debut album by pianist and composer Iseul Kim, recorded in 2018, bringing a collection of original compositions which display a substantial root in the Argentine New Tango language, also involving elements of classical music and improvisation.

Iseul Kim appeared to be working towards the creation of works used as a vehicle for her improvisational pianism, executed with excellence. In Iseul Kim’s First Project Liberosis, Iseul Kim emphasizes beauty and elegance, offering listeners a comfortable experience, meticulously constructed and delivered.
